“ Loving architecture means not being able to stop yourself
from taking a look at it to unravel its mysteries ”

photographic approach

the hand-crafted image

How to photograph architecture to show the intentions and ideas of architects?

In his work, Guillaume Porche strives to combine the craft of analog photography with his knowledge of architecture. His approach, his know-how and his philosophy all go into making architecture visible.

Analog photography is a choice, a way of practising in which each stage is meticulously thought through. It is through complete mastery and control of the analog process that he produces his photographs, from the choice of film, to the development of the negative, via digitisation, right through to the darkroom print.

The image is created by hand. The process is not set in stone, but adapted to today’s needs. The timelessness of film photography is used to create contemporary images that reflect the architecture and intentions of the architects.

reflective practice

revealing architecture

Educated as an architect at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture in Strasbourg, he has developed his photographic skills and his understanding of architectural projects. Sensitive to light, materiality, geometry, composition, spaces and their relationships, he uses his knowledge of the profession to highlight and emphasise projects in his photos.

Architectural photography is about the strength of subtle and accurate connections, relationships, unveilings and correspondences between buildings and their environments, between spaces and uses, between matter and light. In his work, Guillaume Porche aims to provide a photographic response to the history and character of a place.

Each series of photographs is constructed as a narrative and a story following a path, around, towards and then into the architecture, showing the sequences, thresholds and singularities of a building.
